Girls’ Resource Centre (Urja)

Visibalizing girls and girlhood issues, empowerment of girls and facilitating their participation in public life.

Focus of intervention is on developing girls’ preparedness for life in future as well as on influencing their social ecology to build support for girls’ empowerment.

This project imparts knowledge, exposure and life skills to girls in the age group of 10-18 years, in safe spaces created for them in their bastis (poor neighbourhoods/slums). Girls from deprived sections gain 21st century skills like those of English, computer, photography and communication. They participate in civic life through public speaking, production of newsletters, posters and leaflets.

Activities are in form of regular sessions, workshops, educational visits, information fairs,  film screenings with discussions, health checkups and running of mobile library.

This work is being expanded to new centres in Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivali in Thane District through “Leadership Training for Adolescent Girls in Marginalised Communities Project” with support of Dining for Women– Changing the World One Dinner at a Time.
